Premis: The Nazi’s won the Battle of Britain in 1940 and England is occupied by Germany. I’m playing Herr Albrecht Richter “The Pride of the Gestapo.” Hilarity ensues (not really). It’s shaping up to be a wonderful production loaded with terrific actors.
From the program: “The idea of Peace in Our Time”, Noël Coward wrote, ”was conceived in Paris shortly after the Liberation. I began to suspect that the physical eff ect of four years intermittent bombing is far less damaging to the intrinsic character of a nation than the spiritual eff ect of four years enemy occupation.”
This mind-bending play, written by a master playwright at his devilish best, poses a most intriguing and terrifying question – What if the Nazis had won the Battle of Britain? Written in 1946, the play takes place in a South London pub with a diverse cast of characters – writers, artists, young members of the resistance, working-class Brits and of course, offi cers of the Third Reich. It presents a curious and fascinating look at London in the 1940’s.
